Summary
BII Chief Exec: “Pleased to see duty to stay the same but disappointed that members face burden of new VAT rates”
BII Chief Executive Neil Robertson commented: “We appreciate that the new coalition government has a difficult job to do to rebalance the books. BII is pleased to see that duty on alcohol is to stay the same, and welcomes the Chancellor’s plan to introduce tax breaks designed to help small businesses grow.
However, we are disappointed that our members will face the burden of new VAT rates – although expected, this will damage the profitability of many pubs and we’ll be monitoring this carefully (as we’re sure will the government ) as it might lead to a reduction in overall tax take as consumers spend less.
We welcome the public sector austerity measures though we note that public sector workers are pub customers too.
BII members are the very entrepreneurial business men and women who will help drive the country out of recession through skill and professional expertise and they need every support to do that. We will be talking to members over the next few weeks to gauge their full reaction to the budget.
