Summary

Despite a last ditch attempt by several Lords to stop it, the Mandatory Code was passed last night by the House of Lords.

BII members and website users rallied round to arm Lib Dem Lord Rupert Redesdale with comments and arguments against the code over the weekend as he went into a debate last night.

With additional support from the Morning Advertiser and the Publican, BII gathered votes for and against opposing the code, plus a range of comments from those who wished to contribute.

63% voted in favour of Lord Redesdale opposing the code, whilst 37% voted for him to allow it to go through. A range of views were expressed, including several in support of the code from the health lobby.

For more details, read a report on the Morning Advertiser website.

Lord Redesdale thanked those who took the trouble to vote or respond to the call for comments via our websites saying: "I agree with much of what has been said and I used the feedback in the debate. Unfortunately, we didn't win this battle but the Government is left in no doubt about our strong feelings on the subject."
