Rent Review Tips On Offer For Licensees At BII Roadshow In Surrey
Released
19/06/2009
Summary
Pub tenants and lessees involved in negotiating rent reviews with their pub companies and breweries will greatly benefit from attending a roadshow being held at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, Surrey, on Tuesday 30th June by BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector.
Four BII regional councils have come together to organise the roadshow – Southern, London, South East and Thames Valley – and it is being sponsored by Enterprise Inns, Magners and Fuller’s. Andrew Pring, Editor of trade magazine the Morning Advertiser, will be chairing the event and the aim is to give BII members and non-members running pubs an in depth understanding of:
- how rents are calculated
- how to prepare for rent reviews
- how to operate as professionally as possible to ensure a fair review is achieved
- how rents are resolved when parties fail to agree
Anyone connected with the subject area can benefit from attending. The presentations will begin with a session on the principles of rent reviews by chartered surveyor Barry Gillham FRICS from Fleurets. He will be followed by Nick Light MBII of Enterprise who will look at how the pubcos approach rent reviews. Steve Howe, BII Director of Membership, will explain the role of BII Benchmarking and Accreditation Services (BIIBAS) and how successful the scheme has been in accrediting pub company codes of practice for clarity.
The format of the event allows for mid-morning breakout sessions. Licensees will be given an in depth guide to preparing and conducting themselves throughout the rent review process, led by industry consultant Phil Dixon CMBII. He will include an update following the Business & Enterprise Select Committee (BEC) inquiry report.
Meanwhile, other attendees may participate in a discussion led by Barry Gillham on issues surrounding the pub rental model following the BEC report. The day will wrap up with a Q&A session and lunch.
Martin O’Grady, Chairman of BII Southern Region, commented: “Just the very thought of a rent review can incite fear in a licensee. If you’re not properly prepared, they can be a very stressful experience. We aim to dispel some of the myths surrounding rent reviews, encourage positive communication between licensees and pubcos and assist the process to make it as straightforward as possible.”
Tickets for the event cost just £25 + VAT for BII members and £29 + VAT for non-members. This includes lunch and free entry to the museum. Registration is from 9.30am and lunch will be served at 1.10pm. For more information or to book a place, call 01202 242714 or 07771 560922 or to book online, click here.
